Hess Denounces Election-time Revelations of Brewer’s Mentally-Challenged Son’s Criminal past.
“I’ve heard a lot of people voice their opinions on this story and I don’t care if it was purposely leaked to get Jan a sympathy vote, or if it was timed to embarrass her for having shown special budgetary favor to state services directly benefiting her son, at a critical time in her campaign to be elected as Governor—it’s still a smarmy thing to do.”
Hess refused to comment on the specifics of Brewer’s son’s condition or on the sexual assaults he committed in 1989, but did respond to questions about the apparent impropriety of the Governor’s actions in directing taxpayer dollars to her personal benefit,
“Of course I have concerns when a public officer uses the power of their office to benefit specific individuals—that kind of corruption is a big part of why I got in this race, but at the same time, the actions or mental condition of a candidate’s family member should never be used to influence an election.
If there are legitimate ethical or legal questions, there will be a more appropriate time to look into them. I don’t want this to distract from this election cycle because there’s too much at stake, and there are too many other reasons not to vote for either a Republican or a Democrat—and I want the People of Arizona to hear them.”
